TraxStocks shows visual comparisons of financial data over time. This app is useful for anyone wanting to see stock market performance.  It complements the Apple Stocks App by allowing nuanced visual comparisons between stocks and giving easy access to the entire history of the stock. TraxStocks is the first in a series of apps that creates visual displays from data collected over time. It uses Edward Tufte’s “sparklines” to allow rapid understanding of large amounts of data. This app allows users to zoom into a single week of data or zoom out to see trends two years at a time.  It is then possible to “swipe” through time to view the entire history of the stock or index.

The portrait view shows selected stocks’ closing values over time. This app gives users both the “big picture” and detailed specific information in the same view.  Want to know the exact value of a stock on a specific date?  Just touch the line near that date and the value is displayed. Want to see how a stock is performing compared to the Dow Jones?  Drag a transparent copy of the Dow Jones history over that stock and instantly see how they compare.

TraxStocks has two different landscape views that show more data and comparisons.  Turn clockwise and a figure compares trends in closing price, percent change and volume for selected stocks and indexes.  Turn counterclockwise and a figure compares values of closing prices over time on the full screen.

TraxStocks uses the iphone’s size, power and flexibility to easily access large amounts of financial data. High resolution figures allow visual comparisons and can display thousands of pieces of data on a single screen.  It has never been so easy to see stock market performance in the palm of your hand!
